Australia gives half a dozen scholarships per year, including for study in Australia or the Pacific region.

 

Australia Awards Scholarships - 2025

The Australia Embassy offers two types of scholarships to citizens of the Republic of Marshalls Islands – Postgraduate study in Australia or Undergraduate/Postgraduate study in the Pacific.All course fees, travel, accommodation, and fortnightly stipend is provided. Applicants can bring immediate family (partner, children). 

Applications for study in 2025 are now open.  Check here for information about studying in Australia at studyaustralia.gov.au. Scholarships close on 30 April 2024.  Late applications will not be accepted.

Australia Awards Scholarships are offered for Postgraduate level (Master’s or Doctorate) degree at Australian Institutions.

Requirements for Master’s Program

  • Applicant must have a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 3 years work experience in the field you wish to study
  • Must not hold or have held a scholarship to study outside your home country in the 24 months preceding the application
  • Must not hold a Master’s Degree at either time

Requirements for Doctorate Program

  • Applicant must have Master's degree and minimum of 3 years work experience in the field you wish to study
  • Must not hold or have held a scholarship to study outside your home country in the 24 months preceding the application

Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships are offered for undergraduate and postgraduate level at the following instututions:

Requirements for USP and UPNG

  • For undergraduate study program, applicants must have an Associate's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • For postgraduate study program, applicants must have a bachelor's degree with at least 3 years' work experience

Requirements for FNU

  • For MBBS study program, applicants must have an Associate's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA in Health Careers Opportunity Program courses
  • For other undergraduate medical study programs, applicants must have an Associate's degree with a minimum 3.0 in Health Career Opportunity Program courses
  • For postgraduate study program, applicants must have a bachelor's degree with at least 3 years' work experience
  • Note: Applicants not meeting the mimimum entry requirement (MER) for undergraduate study program at FNU, may be recommended for a 1 year bridging program prior to the intended study program.

How to apply

For all types of Australia Awards scholarships, you must be a citizen of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. More information on Australia Awards and eligibility.

To apply, you will need to apply online via the Australia Scholarships Information System (OASIS). You will be required to answer some questions to establish your eligibility. You will then be given a unique registration number, username and password.

You must submit your application online through OASIS unless there are extenuating circumstances that prevent you from doing so.

Defence Cooperation Scholarship Program - 2024

The Australian Department of Defence offers an annual post-graduate scholarship for study in Australia. You can choose from one of 13 institutions and 22 courses. While Defence is organising the scholarship, study is at civilian universities in cities across the country and open to civilian applicants in the RMI. All course fees, travel, accommodation, and fortnightly stipend is provided. Applicants can bring immediate family (partner, children). 

Applications for the DCSP are open to Marshallese citizens employed in the security, justice, marine conservation or disaster response sector. It may be the perfect step for candidates seeking a career change or wanting to bolster their skills. This is an excellent opportunity to study at one of Australia’s many fantastic universities and build relationships with peers from Australia and across the Indo-Pacific.

The Australian Embassy is available to answer your questions regarding the DCSP, living in Australia, visa applications, and courses available for study in Australia.

Candidate requirements:

  • Be an RMI citizen
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree which can be recognised in Australia
  • Be fluent in English and able to complete an IELTS-A test, receiving a score of at least 6.5

The candidate must currently (or within the last 12 months) be working in either:

  • the RMI public service
  • an NGO in the maritime conservation, justice, climate change/disaster response and resilience sector
  • a regional organisation in any of the above sectors.

The candidate must not already hold a postgraduate degree in a related area.
